The Nicola Valley Film Society will be participating in a Canada 150th celebration along with approximately 180 Film Societies across the country on April 19th. This celebration is called CANADA ON SCREEN and for April 19th every Film Society participating will be screening a Canadian film without charge. This initiative is through the Toronto Film Circuit of which we are associated. The film that we will be screening is “WATER” by acclaimed director Deepa Mehta. This film was released in 2005 and has received many awards and was nominated for an Academy Award in 2007. It will be screened up at the NVIT Lecture Theatre at 7:00 pm on April 19th. We are excited about our participation in this Cross Canada event!
About the Film
This film takes place in 1938 and examines the plight of a group of widows forced into poverty at a temple in the holy city of Varanasi. It focuses on a relationship between one of the widows, who wants to escape the social restrictions imposed on widows, and a man who is from the highest caste and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi.
The film received many positive reviews. Written and directed by Deepa Mehta, it was Canada’s nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 79th Academy Awards in 2007 and won many important awards around the world following its release. The film is also the third and final installment of Mehta’s ELEMENTS trilogy and was preceded by FIRE (1996) and EARTH (1998) both written and directed by Deepa Mehta.
“Serene on the surface yet roiling underneath, the film neatly parallels the plight of widows under Hindu fundamentalism to that of India under British colonialism.” J. Catsoulis, New York Times
